Also known as Deepavali, a Sanskrit word meaning “rows of lighted lamps,” it is one of the most popular festivals celebrated across India.

The festival of lights that celebrates the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance.

When is it celebrated?

Diwali falls between October and November, but the exact date changes each year as it is marked by the Hindu lunar calendar.

How is it celebrated?

Diwali is part of a five day festival that is celebrated with music, lights, fireworks and sharing traditional sweets.

Before Diwali , people clean, renovate, and decorate their homes and offices. On Diwali night, people dress up in new clothes or their best outfits, light up diyas (lamps and candles) inside and outside their home, participate in family puja (prayers) typically to Lakshmi – the goddess of fertility and prosperity.

After puja, fireworks follow, then a family feast including mithai (sweets), and an exchange of gifts between family members and close friends.
